Who are we?Medical Friends was founded at UCLA in 2012 by pre-med students who wanted to change the way their fellow pre-med and pre-health peers interacted with one another. As UCLA's first mentorship organization catered towards pre-health students, our program pairs up upperclassmen pre-health mentors with underclassmen who are interested in pursuing a career in the field of healthcare in order to facilitate supportive, inclusive, and collaborative spaces for students to help one another.
In addition to mentee-mentor mentorship, we hold weekly interactive workshops to educate pre-health students on various topics including research, local volunteer opportunities, applying to medical school, and more. We also invite guest speakers from varying backgrounds in healthcare (M.D., PhD., D.O., nursing, etc.) to speak on their experiences and answer questions from students who are interested in these fields. |
Friendship & Mentorship“Friendship is two-sided. It isn’t a friend just because someone’s doing something nice for you. That’s a nice person. There’s friendship when you do for each other. It’s like marriage - it’s two-sided.” — John Wooden
As the club name suggests, Medical Friends also promotes the fostering of long-lasting friendships. Current UCLA pre-health students will be paired with incoming freshman and transfer students based on shared common interests. Pre-health mentors will be responsible for making sure their mentees are taken care of. When mentees have questions, they’ll have someone to turn to. When they need a shoulder to lean on, their mentor will be there for them. Mentees can also find fellow mentee friends for help in academics and social life. This is how doctors and other pre-health professionals operate in the field—as a team—and this type of atmosphere is encouraged for success as a UCLA pre-health student.
